Here are a few reading strategies we recommend at our workshops:
Develop a routine to read aloud with your child every day.
Ask about the book cover or picture in the book.
Ask open-ended questions about the story to encourage your child to talk.
Here are a few ways to find reading anywhere at home:
Read recipes aloud to younger kids, ask older kids to help read the recipe with you.
Read words and ask children to come up with a word that rhymes. " I see the word box. What rhymes with box?"
Find words around the room that start with the same letter as your child's name.
Here are some ideas for how you can bring the outside in:
Ask family members to send letters, texts, and emails to your child and read them together. Work together to write a response.
After a walk or looking out the window, ask your child to draw whatever they saw, then have your child describe it to you.
Show that you’re a reader yourself! Children who see their parents read (whether magazines, books, or anything else) are more likely to read.
