We partner with 91 early education centers in Communities across the greater Los Angeles Area
For 25 years, we have partnered with Los Angeles communities facing significant inequities to ensure children’s access to early literacy resources and family engagement that inspires and equips families with the tools to ignite their children’s learning in the days and years to come.
Currently, Ready, Set, Read! partners with LAUSD’s Early Childhood Education Division to enhance the school system’s capacity to foster children’s literacy in schools and at home. We collaborate with district-level leadership, and early education center principals and educators to amplify our collective ability to promote early literacy, family engagement, and kindergarten readiness for Los Angeles children ages 0-5.
We serve 91 early education centers across the greater Los Angeles area (map at right), reaching 10,000+ children and their families each year.
Educator Conference and community of practice focused on Early literacy
Ready, Set, Read! hosts an annual convening for educators, which often includes a panel discussion among children’s book authors and illustrators who share “the stories behind the stories” and discuss the importance of diversity in children’s books and selecting culturally affirming texts. Discussion includes strategies and activities to take learning beyond the book and, where relevant, beyond the classroom.
During these convenings we also center the knowledge and wisdom of LAUSD educators, inviting them to share their successes related family engagement in their school communities. Principals and educators are also welcomed to share challenges and seek input and support from other school sites, building a community of practice focused on early literacy and family engagement.
Turnkey family engagement workshops
Ready, Set, Read! provides turnkey, bilingual (English/Spanish) early literacy curriculum for educators to use when they host family engagement workshops three times each year at their respective EECs. The curriculum supports the rollout of three workshops (Foundations of Literacy; Math & Literacy; and Science & Literacy).
These workshops shine a bright light on families’ inherent capacity to ignite their children’s learning, language development, and literacy. Curriculum helps familiarize families with developmentally appropriate domains, including social-emotional learning and pre-school literacy, math, and science concepts. Families walk away with strategies to build at-home read-aloud routines, and also the understanding that everyday interactions such as songs, stories, and even trips to the grocery store can become magnificent moments for language-rich interactions that nurture their children’s learning and development.
Ready, Set, Read!’s curriculum draws on the wisdom and experience of the early childhood educators, whose nurturing relationships with the children and established trust with the families make them the ideal messengers for information about how families can support their children’s early learning.
